How important is your high school GPA

Are you sitting in your room crying yourself to sleep because you can’t get over the fact that you got a bad grade in your AP Chem Class. Well…. don’t.

I am sure that many of us have found ourselves in at least one difficult class in highschool and were not so happy with our grades. With all of what highschool students do, it is very oftentimes difficult to maintain a perfect gpa, especially when taking advanced placement and honor classes.

We all probably stress for the same reason – college admissions. So, I am here to tell you to JUST BREATHE!!

Colleges look at overall GPAs from highschool during the admission process. While having good grades is important, it is not the only thing colleges look at. Colleges look at your transcript to see your growth and performance over the course of all of your highschool career. So if you did not do very well in your freshman year, you can always work to improve in the following years of highschool. Or if you didn’t do well in one semester of the class but improved in the next semester you are showing your abilities to adapt to difficult classes and do better. Not only can this be used as a tool to impress colleges but it can alleviate some of the stress we have,as students.

In addition, you may have taken harder classes and not done very well in them. But these hard classes show that you are willing to challenge yourself and take rigorous activities. So don’t stress too much if your grades aren’t perfect. Make sure you are trying the best you can and challenging yourself to do better.

Side note:

Here are some stats of Ivy and UC acceptances based on GPA.

Most Ivy Leagues look for GPAs in the 3.8 to 4 and above range.

For the UCs –  California applicants must earn at least a 3.0 GPA and nonresidents must earn a minimum 3.4 GPA.

We got this gang! Just stay focussed!!
